You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
— John 8:44 —

Satan is the father of murder and lying. These words recall the Garden of Eden where he deceived Adam and Eve, and as a result, sin and death entered the world. John Calvin said, “As soon as man was created, Satan was impelled by a wicked desire to hurt, and directed his strength to destroying him.” When Jesus said “you are of your father the devil,” He was accusing the Jews of being offspring of Satan. The reason why the Jews wanted to kill Jesus was that they manifested their father’s characteristics. Anchor your convictions in the truth and be faithful to share it with others. They did not believe in the truth, and like the devil, they wanted to destroy Jesus, who is truth incarnate. For believers today, these are challenging times. Many people get offended, like the Jews of Jesus’ day, when we tell them the truth. Proclaiming that Jesus Christ is the only way to salvation will alienate and offend. This postmodern culture views truth as being relative to each individual. It insists that objective and absolute truth does not exist. These claims must be exposed as lies and the truth must be proclaimed. What shall we do then? First, we must remember that there is absolute truth. Second, there is a clear distinction between truth and lies. Christ is the ultimate manifestation and standard of truth (John 14:6). Satan and those who reject Christ are the ultimate manifestations of lies. Third, we need to remember that the gospel of Christ is the only hope for this postmodern world. Anchor your convictions in the truth and be faithful to share it with others.
