Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
— Psalm 23:4 —

There are times in life when dark shadows loom over us when gloomy foes sap our joy and make us grow weary. There are times when we are left clueless and hopeless, and the shadow of death becomes an adversary that we do not understand. So, how do we fight such an enemy? How do we contend with a shadow? We might draw the sword and charge against it, but again and again, after endless blows, darkness holds its ground. We simply must trust and follow the Shepherd, and let His loving and faithful presence comfort our heart And yet, there is no need to fear this dark road where evil hides because the Good Shepherd is the very reason we are on it. He led us there. Not by accident, but by the exercise of His sovereign will. This seemingly bottomless pit is the path that leads us to the sheepfold where our strength is renewed. In the meantime, while following the Shepherd through the valley of the shadow of death, we find comfort in the powerful protection of His rod and the infinitely wise guidance of His staff. But, most importantly, His rod and staff remind us that He is with us. He, who overpowers darkness, He, who is the Light, shines with everlasting splendor in our gloomiest nights. The shadow of death vanishes forever under the dazzling radiance of the Shepherd. Therefore, what ought we to do? We do not need to seek to understand that which overwhelms us or to conquer the shadows. We simply must trust and follow the Shepherd, and let His loving and faithful presence comfort our heart, because He is with us always, even to the end of the age.
