When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate.

In the beginning, God blessed Adam and Eve with precious, unblemished gifts. They had flawless companionship with God, who was their Creator, Sustainer, and Friend. Despite their perfect condition, they chose to sin against God. Their experience gives some transcendent truths about the devious delights of sin. Sin appears more pleasing than obedience. Despite the blessings Adam and Eve enjoyed in the garden, they were lured toward sin by the one thing they could not experience—the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. As you treasure the Savior today, guard yourself against these devious delights of sin. In their foolishness, they looked away from the beauty, provision, and greatness of God. This is the same strategy Satan uses on believers today. He tries to deceive us so that we look away from our great God. Sin appears more fruitful than obedience. While desiring wisdom is commendable, seeking it apart from God is not. In their covetousness, Adam and Eve pursued the way of evil to obtain something that can only be acquired by fearing and obeying God. Believers must remember that although the way of sin might appear beneficial, it only leads to destruction (Prov. 13:15). Sin is a choice, just as obedience is a choice. Adam and Eve were faced with a decision: trust in Satan’s lies or obey the Creator. Sadly, they followed the devious scheme of the evil one, bringing the consequences of their actions upon all mankind (Rom. 5:12). Thankfully, through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, God has granted the power and means to overcome Satan’s schemes of temptation and sin (James 4:7). As you treasure the Savior today, guard yourself against these devious delights of sin.
