Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
— Romans 8:1 —

This royal pronouncement, like a trumpet blast from heaven, seizes the attention. No condemnation! This means that there is absolutely no punishment or remaining debt for us to pay. Our sins have been taken away (John 1:29), blotted out (Acts 3:19), washed away (Acts 22:16), covered (Rom. 4:7), and will never be remembered again (Heb. 8:12)! Notice for whom this applies—“for those who are in Christ Jesus.” This trumpet-blast pronouncement is for believers in Christ because we have a new position in Him. The law has been satisfied and God has been appeased in Christ. This truth should carry us forward each day in the blessed freedom of grace. God no longer has anything against us because He has already punished Christ for all of our sins—past, present, and future. He is pleased with us because we have been clothed with the perfect righteousness of His Son. Even though we still sin, these do not condemn us, nor does death have any power over us. The law has been satisfied and God has been appeased in Christ. Armed with this powerful pronouncement, we are enabled to live freely in Christ as victors over sin. Grace is not licensed to sin—may it never be! It is the seedbed of righteousness. We know that if we abide in Christ, He is like an invincible fortress that protects us from every danger of condemnation. For those who abide in Christ, there is nothing but forgiveness and eternal love. The slanderous accusations of the devil are nothing but empty words. Jesus paid it all, and all to Him we owe.
