And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.

Love should be the chief disposition of our souls toward God. Our God seeks to occupy the highest place in our thinking and to be the apex of our affections and desires. Thus, we must love Him supremely. It is this supreme love for God that will shape and color everything else that we do or say. All attempts to obey God without first loving him are like attempting to fly a kite without any breeze. This supreme love will cleanse and purify. Yet, sometimes our love for God can wane, and consequently, our work for God can be done without the love of God. There can be motives that take the highest place in our thinking and desires. For example, a sense of duty is a noble thing, but unless the love of God is supreme in your heart and soul, that duty will miss the mark. All attempts to obey God without first loving him are like attempting to fly a kite without any breeze. This issue must be important because so much of the New Testament is spent on telling us about God’s love in general, and for us in particular. Love begets love. The love of God in Christ Jesus, greater far than tongue or pen can ever tell, effects and creates a response of love in us. We love because He first loved us (1 John 4:19). So let us daily renew our love for God, and with our heart, soul, mind, and strength, love Him supremely.
