Spiritual Boldness in Evangelism

And when they had prayed, the place where they had gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God with boldness.

My adopted country of Honduras is known for having one of the highest crime rates in the world, especially murder. Gangs, drugs, and vengeance plague the impoverished and often helpless people. Yet, I have been amazed by the boldness of many believers, especially pastors, as they seek to win the lost and share the only hope for change in such a lost and dangerous world. On motorcycles and bicycles they go into villages along unprotected and hazardous paths, at times infested by thieves, for the sole purpose of obeying the Great Commission. Pray to God that His Spirit would strengthen you today to speak the word of God with boldness. How do they do this? From where do they get their boldness and strength? Acts 4:31 tells us that it comes directly from God through the Person of the Holy Spirit. Before receiving the Holy Spirit, when faced with a threat of danger from those around, the disciples scattered and fled (Matt. 26:56). But now, having received the Holy Spirit, they are once again facing a life-threatening warning from the rulers not to preach the gospel. This time, however, their response is entirely different. This time they stood their ground, saying, “We cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard” (Acts 4:20). And in Acts 4:31, they prayed and, having been empowered by the Holy Spirit, they “[spoke] the word of God with boldness.” If we know Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, then we have this same Holy Spirit dwelling and working within us to empower us to obedience, especially obedience to the Great Commission. Pray to God that His Spirit would strengthen you today to speak the word of God with boldness.
