All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness.

The Bible is God’s inspired book. He breathed it out and His servants wrote it down. Because it comes from God, it is profitable for teaching and imparts the necessary knowledge to live a godly life. It reproves by confronting sin, dragging it out from its hiding place, so that we can repent of it. The Bible also corrects. To correct means to straighten out, like putting a bone back in its place. The Bible likewise sets us straight so that the body of Christ can function properly. The Bible does not just help us survive, it enables us to live an abundant life of victory even in enemy territory! Lastly, the inspired word of God is profitable for training in righteousness. It is God’s tool to produce in us desires, attitudes, and actions that are fitting for children of God. Recently, someone gave me a Swiss Army Knife, something I had seen used by survival experts on television. I was excited to discover all the tools in it, and imagined myself using it in various survival situations. But how much more excited should we be about Scripture, seeking to discover all the useful truths that God has provided for our lives? The Bible does not just help us survive, it enables us to live an abundant life of victory even in enemy territory! Though I’ve imagined myself in various survival situations, I’ve only in fact used my knife twice, both times at home. I even forgot it during my last camping trip. I can, it turns out, live without it; but we cannot live without God’s word. It is vital for our daily lives and our ultimate good. Let’s learn to use it.
