I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me.

The church I attend is constructing a new building. Since the building has a very nice design and is in the city center, we are now all the more visible for everyone. During construction, many have shown interest: When is the new church going to be ready? Can we attend the opening ceremony? Do others see Christ ruling in your life through your love for other Christians and obedience to God’s word? Having faced a lot of indifference in the past, this obviously encourages us, but we are well aware that the modern design of the building or its beauty can only have an impact on their senses, never on their hearts. In this text, Christ tells us what will really be an effective testimony to our city, what is going to really reveal Him as the Savior sent by the Father. Our church’s main characteristic must be that Christ rules in our lives. This is proven when we, empowered by the Spirit, demonstrate the salvation that God has granted us in His love. We do this through our love for one another and through our obedience to Christ and His word. Our new building may gain us some visitors, but what will gain us brothers and sisters in Christ is God working in the hearts of those visitors, making known His Son as the sinner’s Savior. More than a beautiful building, our prayer is for people to see the gospel lived out through a group of sinners, now saved and transformed, living in harmony, and showing God’s love in word and deed. Do others see Christ ruling in your life through your love for other Christians and obedience to God’s word?
