I have other sheep, which are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will hear My voice; and they will become one flock with one shepherd.

After declaring “I am the good shepherd” (the fourth of Christ’s seven “I am” statements in John’s gospel—statements that describe the fullness of His character as the God of redemption), Jesus announces to the Jews that He has “other sheep, which are not of this fold.” This reference to “other sheep” speaks of the Gentile elect who are not of the Jewish fold. Ponder deeply the sweet and lavish grace of God to bring you, who were once far from Him, into His fold. Whenever I come across verses like this, which make reference to the salvation of the Gentiles, I cannot help but be profoundly moved and humbled by God’s graciousness to reach us non-Jews who “were at that time separate from Christ, excluded from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world” (Eph. 2:12). How can I not live my life for the glory and pleasure of God? Jesus, the good shepherd, was sent to be my shepherd, too! It is motivating to consider that God has redeemed people from every tribe, tongue, and nation to become one flock in Christ’s excellent care. Whenever you are tempted to relax your commitment to Christ, ponder deeply the sweet and lavish grace of God to bring you, who were once far from Him, into His fold. A sheep without a shepherd is doomed to destruction, but God has given us a good shepherd in Christ Jesus. Remember this glorious privilege and press on with renewed devotion to follow Him.
