The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
— Psalm 34:18 —

God never rejects a person who is humble before Him. Those who are brokenhearted should be greatly encouraged that God is near to them. Those who are crushed in spirit should expect His comfort and rescue. Pride and arrogance will always be opposed by God, but He gives grace to the humble. We thank you, God, that You do not turn us away when we come to You humble and broken, seeking Your help. It is His nature to lift up the lowly and to bring down the lofty. O, God, give us a contrite heart and a crushed spirit so that we may receive the help we so desperately need! David expressed this truth in another psalm: “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise” (Psa. 51:17). Few things are more precious in the eyes of God than a repentant sinner who has come to Him broken and crushed to receive forgiveness and mercy. He is a God merciful and gracious, who forgives iniquity and transgression and sin. He is a God who lifts up the poor man from the ash heap and makes him to be a prince among the people. We thank you, God, that You do not turn us away when we come to You humble and broken, seeking Your help. We cannot stand on our own, and so we praise You for lifting us up and rescuing us in our time of need. Your grace is greater than all our sin.
