Conduct yourselves with wisdom toward outsiders, making the most of the opportunity.
— Colossians 4:5 —

Modern society, as in the past, is characterized by foolish hearts and minds, which rebel against and reject God. While these influences are in our sinful natures, the gospel demands that every Christian “conduct [himself] with wisdom.” In our daily lives, we are to demonstrate God’s wisdom by behaving righteously and lovingly toward God and others. Conduct refers to a lifestyle and implies a permanent behavior, not one that is temporary or on occasion. Let your life be the commentary that explains the message you proclaim. What is the purpose of conducting ourselves with wisdom toward outsiders if those outsiders are foolish? It is so that they can see the effects of the gospel of Christ in us. The second part of the verse says “making the most of the opportunity,” which means taking advantage of the time that we have. This is incredible. The Scriptures here teach us that every day precious opportunities will present themselves for us to proclaim Christ and honor Him through our actions. We must take advantage of these opportunities so that with wise conduct, the world can receive a clear and effective testimony. To make the most of the time, we are called to not lose sight of the opportunity to testify and to conduct ourselves wisely in our every- day relationships with family, at work, in school, etc. Remember, we were once the outsiders characterized by foolishness, rebellion, and rejecting God; but God, having redeemed us, grants us the capacity to display His wisdom. Make the most of today’s opportunities. Let your life be the commentary that explains the message you proclaim.
