Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

It’s impossible to count the number of words that pass into our minds in the course of one day. From the varied sources of the radio, television, the Internet, advertisements, books, what we hear people say—each one of these are sources of words that fill our minds. These words, passing through our minds, offer us a myriad of topics for our contemplation. When the word of Christ takes up residence in you, worship is unavoidable. What fills our thinking then settles into our hearts, taking hold of us and shaping our lives. Whatever settles into our hearts then becomes our object of worship. In view of this progression, how important it is for us to take in God’s word and to let it richly dwell within us. The teaching of Christ contains the wisdom which can guard us from making fateful mistakes with stinging consequences. God’s word sweeps from our soul the filthy garbage that can occupy our thoughts, exchanging it for the single most fitting object of adoration—Christ. When the word of Christ takes up residence in you, worship is unavoidable. Psalms, praises, and spiritual songs will flow from your heart, for it has been taken captive by the beauty of Christ. When the word richly dwells in you, then you naturally teach and admonish others for mutual edification. When the word is contemplated, you can’t but help sing with thankfulness to God. What do you open the door of your heart to? What fills your mind? Let it be Christ and His word, and may it take up a rich residence there—it is that important for your soul.
