… speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord.

Congregational singing is one of my favorite parts during a Sunday worship service, second only to the preaching of God’s word. Oftentimes, I will stop, close my eyes, and listen to the hundreds of voices filling up our sanctuary walls. Mouths that used to curse and blaspheme God now exalt and magnify Him who rescued them from the domain of darkness, transferring them to the kingdom of His beloved Son (Col. 1:13). Lips that used to hurt and slander now build up others through psalms and hymns and spiritual songs. Are you Spirit-filled? Then don’t hold back. Sing! Ephesians 5:19–21 describes the results of being Spirit-filled. To be filled with the Holy Spirit is to be yielded to His power, His guidance, and His will. As you submit to His controlling influence, you will be singing (Eph. 5:19), giving thanks (Eph. 5:20), and humbly submitting to others (Eph. 5:21). A Spirit-filled Christian sings to the praise and glory of his Lord and Savior. He is not lifeless, lacking vigor or excitement. The love of Christ compels him; the Holy Spirit empowers him. He may not be as gifted as others, but that doesn’t hinder him from communicating his heartfelt joy and gratitude toward his Savior. Believers sing as an appropriate response to all that the triune God has done for them in Christ. Reflecting upon it just doesn’t cut it. God’s people must sing it. Are you grateful for what Christ has done for you? Are you humbled by God’s grace and mercy toward you in Christ? Are you Spirit-filled? Then don’t hold back. Sing!
