Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her.

The essence of true love is giving. Christ “loved the church and gave Himself up for her.” Or to put it in the words of the apostle John: “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son” (John 3:16). At this point, the love of Christ astounds us. Christ loved the church so much that He gave Himself up for her. There is nothing more valuable than God Himself. Learn how to love your wife by observing the Savior’s love for you, in spite of your failures At the same time, there is no one more undeserving of God’s love than a rebellious sinner. Yet, the second Person of the Trinity chose to give Himself up for His bride, the church, by dying on a cross. In doing so He covered her shame, bore her disgraces, and mended her wounds. He paid the full price of her sins in His own body on the cross. If Jesus Christ’s main ministry was to love His bride to such a lavish extent, how, then, are husbands to live that out with their wives? Herein lies the wondrous mystery revealed—that a man’s love for his wife displays the love of Christ for His church. Husband, is your love for your wife conditional? Since when did the church deserve such a loving Savior? Never. Are you humbly loving your wife? Do you hold your love till it is earned or deserved? Consider the extent of humility that Christ had when He gave Himself up for His bride. The task is indeed too great for us to accomplish on our own. Praise God for His forgiveness and enablement. Learn how to love your wife by observing the Savior’s love for you, in spite of your failures to obey this command.
