You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you.
— John 15:16 —

There are things in this life that we can choose. Friends, for ex- ample, usually choose one another due to common interests or shared values. But God’s choice is not determined by any good that He sees in us. It is only through the unconditional and sovereign character of Christ’s eternal love that God could choose sinners to become His friends. Christ’s followers are His friends, and as such, He enables us to share in His work. Let us never forget that we were chosen and equipped to produce eternal fruit! He appoints us and puts the treasure of the gospel in our hands so that we may bear fruit. But branches only bear fruit if they abide in the vine. We are dependent on Christ for every good fruit. And the primary directive as ambassadors of Christ is the sublime task of proclaiming His gospel, the good news of forgiveness and eternal life in Christ Jesus! We have the privilege of proclaiming this gospel to every man, woman, and child. From the pulpit to children’s Sunday School to outreach ministries, the church has the opportunity to bear fruit that remains. Not only does Jesus choose us to serve Him, but He also promises us that the Father will answer our prayers. In doing so, He guarantees that we will be equipped to produce the promised fruit. In light of God’s choosing us to be a part of His kingdom, we should be actively involved in producing fruit for the kingdom through prayer and our actions. Let us never forget that we were chosen and equipped to produce eternal fruit!
