It is easy to love money. Not only can we pay our bills with money but we can also buy more “stuff” with it. And this stuff makes us happier, right? We think the equation goes like this: more money equals more stuff equals more happiness. But this is contrary to biblical wisdom. Whoever loves money will not be satisfied with it (Eccles. 5:10). God alone satisfies the true needs of the body and soul. It is common for us to think that only the wealthy struggle with greed. He is the one who gives us the power and ability to obtain wealth (Deut. 8:18). He always provides what we need (Matt. 6:25–31). Sometimes this pro-vision is more and other times less, but it is always sufficient (Phil. 4:11–12). It is common for us to think that only the wealthy struggle with greed. However, during many years of missionary service among both poor and rich in multiple countries, I have observed that dissatisfaction with how much money and possessions we have is common to all men, even missionaries! The love of money can afflict anyone—rich or poor—because it is simply an attitude whereby we set our hearts on material things. Jesus warned us to be on guard against this: “For not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions” (Luke 12:15). Therefore, live your life free from the love of money, be content with what God has given you, and thank Him every day for His provision.
