But sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence.
— 1 Peter 3:15 —

Shortly before Peter finished his earthly mission and entered the glorious presence of his Savior, he encouraged believers to anticipate suffering for Christ’s sake. Peter knew well that faith in Jesus and a life of godliness will lead to persecution (2 Tim. 3:12). In this exhortation, Peter admonishes Christians not to lose heart in view of pressure, opposition, and suffering, but to endure as they continue to live in this world as aliens and strangers (1 Pet. 2:11). Persecution is coming—prepare now in your attitude and actions for giving an account of the hope in you. One thing that should characterize a Christian’s walk is a special reverence and awe for the Lord Jesus. Peter’s command to sanctify Christ as Lord means that we are to serve Christ as a loving Master, seeing our lives as belonging to him. He has redeemed us with His blood (1 Pet. 1:18–19) and made us His possession (1 Pet. 2:9). He has the ultimate right of our time, talents, strength, and resources. Moreover, we are called to be ready to give an account for our faith in Christ. Just as Jesus predicted, believers are persecuted (Luke 21:12; Matt. 5:10–12) and oppressors demand disciples of Christ to give an account for their hope. Yet Peter is not only interested in Christians’ actions, but he is also concerned about their attitude. How should they respond to their enemies? How should they treat them? They are called to respond with gentleness and reverence, following the example of their Master, who, “while being reviled … did not revile in return; while suffering … uttered no threats” (1 Pet. 2:23). Persecution is coming—prepare now in your attitude and actions for giving an account of the hope in you. Be always ready!
