Throughout history, during the time of the Old Testament and also now in the church age, the people of God have been accompanied by others who think such a connection makes them believers as well. And often it is difficult to distinguish them from true believers because they seem to agree with sound doctrine and can even articulate basic truths of the faith. Let us thank God for every challenging situation in our lives, which gives us both the opportunity to grow and also to verify our faith. Nevertheless, in the final judgment, all such people will be revealed for who they truly are. And so these words of our Lord directed to such people are truly terrifying. For such, eternal punishment is reserved! Therefore, this ought to cause all believers to examine themselves to determine whether they truly are a part of the kingdom of God. Assurance that we are indeed children of God only comes from the Spirit of God and from our walk with God. Trials that come into our lives are all for our good so that we can grow and so that the genuineness of our faith can be demonstrated. The true believer will grow in faith over time. The change that has happened within him will be clear through his good works. Let us thank God for every challenging situation in our lives, which give us both the opportunity to grow and also to verify our faith. Let us thank God for His salvation. Let us persevere so that on that day we will hear those wonderful words: “Well done, good and faithful slave … enter into the joy of your master” (Matt. 25:23).
