But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.
— 1 Peter 2:9 —

There was a period in my life when I studied under a master violin maker. In order to better understand my business and create good instruments, I needed more knowledge of the violin, so I began to study. I learned that you can have perfect pitch, use a good violin, but still play it out of tune. “You can’t hold it like you hold a guitar,” I was told. Christian, remember your high calling! Go therefore and proclaim God’s excellencies. I held it properly and agonized until a musician showed me the proper hand placement. When placed correctly, your fingers come down on the strings right where they should be, and then it’s not difficult to follow the intonation. Something similar happens in the spiritual world. We can be so concentrated on what we must do and what our behavior should be like. We then remember our shortcomings and grow weary. We grow tired and feel like we are overwhelmed by sin—even though Christ is our Lord and we love the Savior. We can think we are just believing sinners. However, Peter gives a comforting word that answers the question, “Who are you?” The answer helps to correct our thoughts: “You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession.” If you have true faith in Jesus Christ, these four descriptions answer the question of your calling and special position. God chose you and He made you a priest, someone who knows Him and represents Him to others. By His grace, you are holy and God took you into His realm as His possession. Christian, remember your high calling! Go therefore and proclaim God’s excellencies.
