…once at the consummation of the ages He has been manifested to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.

Perfect efficacy characterizes the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. In past centuries, the people of God had to offer sacrifices. The purpose was to remind people that they were sinful, and so they were offered continually. According to the Law, apart from individual sacrifices, a special sacrifice was offered on behalf of the entire people once a year on the Day of Atonement. On this day, the high priest took the blood of the sacrificed animal and entered the Holy of Holies, the place of the direct presence of God. We treasure Christ’s sacrifice and put our trust in Him with absolute confidence and dependence. The blood bore testimony that a life was given for the sins of the people. Unfortunately, with this sacrifice and all the rest, there existed one enormous defect. They could not destroy sin. Eradicating people’s sin required a ransom corresponding with the transgression. This is the reason that the Son of God became a man. The Incarnation became a most unique phenomenon, specially ordained by God for the eradication of human sin. The destruction of sin in mankind was possible only through the sacrifice of a holy and righteous man, a person who simultaneously would possess the attributes of God. Only such a unique union could resolve the problem of man’s sin once and for all. This was realized in the person of Jesus Christ. His humanity and divinity allowed Him to offer the sacrifice that truly eradicated sin. This is why we treasure Christ’s sacrifice and put our trust in Him with absolute confidence and dependence. His is the only perfect sacrifice!
