Therefore we ought to support such men, so that we may be fellow workers with the truth.
— 3 John 8 —

How important is your work to missions? Seeing my 20-year corporate career as through a rearview mirror, I wonder how much more fulfilling ministry could have been if I had known a fellow businessman named Gaius. Jesus preached the Great Commission to 11 men (Matt. 28:16–20). Their responsibility was to go and make disciples of all nations. They had to teach people to obey everything Jesus taught. These men needed help. Great news—a short time later, in Acts 2 and 1 Corinthians 15, there were at least 3,511 disciple makers. Now it is your turn. Trained expositors go nowhere without believers fulfilling God’s call to send and support them. Like successful businesses, mission work requires a well-orchestrated supply chain. Meet Gaius, a businessman, and fellow worker with the truth. John commends Gaius’ help of missionaries and strangers (3 John 5), and in our verse today, he exhorts Gaius to support those who have gone out for the sake of Christ. John prayed that God would continue prospering Gaius “in all respects,” which would include his vocational success. The redeemed in the marketplace must underwrite pastoral training centers, professors, translation efforts, and future pastors’ tuition. Trained expositors go nowhere without believers fulfilling God’s call to send and support them (Rom. 10:13–15). This is how people like you and me and Gaius participate in missions. Fellow workers in the truth are obliged to underwrite the Great Commission with their God-given wealth. They are the redeemed who support missionaries—they work together with them for the sake of the truth. Hence, John calls you “fellow workers with the truth.” Your work is a critical link conjoined to others in the supply chain, all engineered to fulfill the Great Commission in your lifetime.
