See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are. For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.
— 1 John 3:1 —
R. M. | Asia
This verse talks about the infinite and immeasurable love of God, which cannot be measured or understood by human intellect. We must humble ourselves as we enter into contemplation of this great subject. The apostle John focuses on this divine love as expressed in the Father sending His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. We were prodigal sons—His enemies—despising the goodness of God. Yet He drew us back to Himself… Through His Son—functioning as Messiah and Mediator, dying on the cross to pay for all our sins, and giving us new life—God has enabled us to become His children. He has poured out this amazing love upon us! He loves to call us by name, as a father calls his own children. This is a special love reserved for those whom He calls His children—a blessing greater than God’s common grace to a fallen unbelieving world. What an encouraging truth this is for growing our faith in our great Father. It is encouraging because of who we were when we received this love. We were prodigal sons—His enemies—despising the goodness of God. Yet He drew us back to Himself with His irresistible grace, and made us not only friends but children who inherit all of heaven’s blessings. It is also encouraging because of who He is to us; He is our Father, He calls us by name, and allows us to know Him. Truly what a great love we walk in as Christians! Take a moment and marvel at this other-worldly love that God the Father has shown to you.
