Recently, an extravagant farewell party was thrown by a very powerful man. Every celebrity, the crème de la crème of society, attended it. The Lord, the Teacher, the Savior, although aware of His supremacy overall, did what was reserved for the lowliest slave—wash feet. Tens of thousands of dollars were spent for the occasion: the most expensive suits, dresses, and jewelry were purchased; the finest foods were offered; the décor was second to none. In a word, it was sumptuous. Jesus’ farewell party, in the Upper Room, was quite different. No special guests; only fishermen, a tax collector, and even one who would go on to betray Him. Only simple food in an equally simple setting. In a word, humble. And the guest of honor, the Lord, washed the dirty feet of His guests—as an illustration, and contrast to their sinful longings to be recognized as great. None of them deserved such high honor. The Lord, the Teacher, the Savior, although aware of His supremacy overall, did what was reserved for the lowliest slave—wash feet. And He did so to undeserving people. He did so to set the greatest example, an example whose pinnacle is found at the cross. The lesson for the disciples then, and the lesson for us, His undeserving disciples today, is to have a proper view of ourselves, and to love and serve one another in a spirit of humility—perfectly exemplified by the Lord Himself. If He served others, how much more should we, even those we deem unworthy. Watch what blessings it will bring! May His Spirit help us serve others in the same way He served us.
