Therefore I say to you, any sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven people, but blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven.
— Matthew 12:31 —
S. R. | Asia
Have you ever been troubled regarding the unpardonable sin? It’s understandable because Jesus talks about the impossibility of forgiveness for this sin. In other words, the one who commits this sin seals himself to eternal doom. This is a scary reality, yet let us remember there should be no comfort from any sin. Each of our sins should trouble us and prompt confession and repentance for forgiveness (1 John 1:9). Jesus is warning us that Christians must not sear their conscience. Yet, there is this sin that will not be forgiven. This sin is committed as a result of ongoing habitual sin. It is committed when one deliberately rejects the work of the Spirit or the testimony of the Spirit concerning Jesus Christ. The one who commits this sin has reached the point of no return, thus, is bound for eternal hell. If you are troubled and fearful that you have committed this sin, take heart, that is a good indicator you have not. A genuine Christian who is indwelt by the Spirit has never and will never commit this sin. Jesus is warning us that Christians must not sear their conscience. We should renounce and repent from all sins so that we will not be carried away by any sin. A real Christian will also persevere in following Christ, and not turn away from Him. Let someone like Judas be a warning to us of not being a genuine disciple. Beloved, you must be sensitive to the leading of the Spirit and take care not to grieve Him (Eph. 4:30). Confess any known sin and ask God for grace to repent.
