And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.
— Romans 8:28 —

This verse is one of the mountain peaks of Scripture, towering in its usage above many others to encourage those in the valleys of life. As one of the most quoted verses in the Bible, it is also one of the most misquoted. Rightly understood it serves to provide hope and endurance for the troubled soul. The promise contained in this verse is to those who love God and are called according to His purpose. You can be assured that no matter what may be your earthly path or outcome, the future glory that awaits you is far surpassing. Those who are called are those who are foreknown, predestined, called, justified, and ultimately glorified by God (Rom. 8:29–30). It is a message of comfort to believers who love God and are being conformed to the image of His Son. The promise is that God is working all things together for good. All things include our strengths and our weaknesses, our sickness and our health, our poverty and our riches, our pains and our pleasures, the calm and the storm. God even used the death of His own Son for good. God’s purpose in working all things together for good is for us to be conformed to the image of His Son that culminates in our glorification. As you face your next trial, remember that the Refiner’s fire is working to eliminate the dross in your life to purify you and make you shine more brilliantly for the Lord Jesus Christ. What this good God has in mind for you may not be what you think is good. But in His perfect wisdom and goodness, you can be assured that no matter what may be your earthly path or outcome, the future glory that awaits you is far surpassing.
