The Global Outreach of Calvary Bible Church

By Bob Dickson

Calvary Bible Church is a non-denominational community of believers that has carved out a longtime home in the city of Burbank in Southern California, where it has resided since December of 1958. It moved to Burbank from nearby Glendale, where it was started by Dr. Jack MacArthur in 1954.

For more than half a century, Calvary Bible Church (CBC) has served as a light to the community of Burbank and the surrounding region under the leadership of pastors such as Dr. MacArthur (1954-69), James Krames (1970-74), Richard Laue (1975-98), Dr. Jack Hughes (2000-12), and Tim Carns (2012-present). The church’s steadfast commitment to the inerrant Word of God, to the unity of the Body of Christ under sound doctrine, and to the expansion of God’s kingdom through evangelism has made CBC a bright beacon for truth within the greater Los Angeles area.

The breadth and scope of CBC’s impact for Christ extends beyond its immediate surroundings, however. To take the true measure of this church’s impact for Christ, you will need more than a map of Southern California.

You will need a globe.

From its campus in Burbank, CBC reaches across oceans with the Gospel of Christ. Through decades of missionary support (the church currently supports 17 missionaries worldwide), and through its partnership with The Master’s Academy International (TMAI), Calvary Bible Church has made a global impact – an impact that continues to build.

CBC’s outreach strategy is four-pronged. It seeks to extend God’s kingdom through 1) Church Planting, 2) Church Strengthening, 3) Evangelical Ministries, and 4) Support Ministries.

Those four priorities are the reason CBC has partnered with TMAI.

The Master’s Academy International is a consortium of Bible training centers that operates worldwide for the purpose of training pastors and lay leaders to serve the Body of Christ. These schools train indigenous peoples to exposit God’s Word and to build a philosophy of ministry that reflects the biblical model.

What CBC leadership has learned in more than a decade of partnership with TMAI is that this model of international outreach results in church plants (as TMAI graduates form new congregations where they are needed most), stronger churches (as pastors and lay leaders are trained to teach the Word and lead biblically), and greater evangelism (as whole churches are galvanized by sound doctrine to share the faith).

CBC’s relationship with TMAI has also generated new levels of enthusiasm within the Burbank congregation as the church becomes more involved with each school through short-term missions teams and regular visits and reports from the training centers themselves.

Currently, CBC is working with six TMAI training centers. Together with TMAI, Calvary Bible Church is building God’s church all over the world. It is making an eternal impact, changing lives in communities where its members could otherwise never be allowed to serve … in places far away from its home in Burbank.

The Lord is always building His church. At CBC, He has built it in Burbank. Through CBC (and TMAI), He is building it all over the world.
